Three-Body Interactions in Many-Body Effective Field Theory

A general principle of any effective low-energy theory is that if a system is probed or interacts at low energies, resolution is also low, and fine details of what happens at short distances or in high-energy intermediate states are not resolved [ 1]. In this case, it is easier and more efficient to use low-energy degrees of freedom for low-energy processes. The short-distance structure can be ...

The Canonical Nuclear Many-Body Problem as an Effective Theory

Recently it was argued that it might be possible to treat the conventional nuclear structure problem – nonrelativistic point nucleons interacting through a static and rather singular potential – as an effective theory in a shell-model basis. In the first half of this talk we describe how such a program can be carried out for the simplest nuclei, the deuteron and He, exploiting a new numerical t...

Strong correlation treated via effective hamiltonians and perturbation theory.

We propose a new approach to determine a suitable zeroth-order wavefunction for multiconfigurational perturbation theory. The same ansatz as in complete active space (CAS) wavefunction optimization is used but it is split in two parts, a principal space (A) and a much larger extended space (B). Löwdin's partitioning technique is employed to map the initial eigenvalue problem to a dimensionality...

Minimizing Effective Many-Body Interactions

A simple two-level model is developed and used to test the properties of effective interactions for performing nuclear structure calculations in truncated model spaces. It is shown that the effective manybody interactions sensitively depend on the choice of the single-particle basis and they appear to be minimized when a self-consistent HartreeFock basis is used.
